How to Stop Putting Pressure on Myself
How do I stop putting too much pressure on myself?
The more pressure you put on yourself, the more unrealistic your expectations will be, and as a result, the more you will despise yourself and you won’t have nearly as much Fun or Success as you could. As a result of this, we quickly fall into a negative cycle.
This is what putting too much pressure on yourself can look like.
- Letting your failures stop you from trying
- Thinking you aren’t good enough.
- Feeling stressed out all the time.
- You always want more and never feeling satisfied.
Take steps to reduce self-induced stress and release the pressure.
In life we face enough stress without putting more on ourselves. This is exactly what many of us do, in one way or another, sometimes without even realizing it. The first step toward releasing pressure off of yourself is to realize when you might be making things harder on yourself than they need to be.
Without blaming yourself, why not learn what you can do to stop the self-sabotage? Here are a few of the best ways to cut down on self-imposed stress.
1. Don't compare yourself to others
People usually put pressure on themselves because they are comparing themselves to somebody else and their accomplishments. This can always make us feel worse when we are under pressure. Everyone comes from a different background and has different skill sets, so it’s silly compare yourself to someone who may be doing better than you. It’s for sure easier said than done.
You just have to try and focus on what you’re doing and what you can control. Celebrate the activity, celebrate how far you have come.
2. Celebrate Progress NOT Perfection
Progress NOT Perfection. Celebrate how far you have come. Nothing is perfect so give yourself permission right now to do things messy and celebrate the activity.
SOOOOOO much pressure comes from thinking what you need to do or get done needs to be perfect. Perfect timing, perfect this or that and the truth is THAT IS A LIE!
Progress TRUMPS Perfection.
DO it messy…Just do it!
3. Replace Pressure with Gratitude
Pause to appreciate yourself for wanting to be better, do better and step into your greatness. Also celebrate and be grateful for what you have, what you are capable of and what you have accomplished.
If your negative thoughts and pressure is not countered, it can become a downward spiral and you may be convinced that you are undeserving, incapable, not worthy and you certainly won’t be having fun or enjoying yourself.
My favorite gratitude journal, helps me practice this step!
How to stop putting pressure on myself - wrap up
It’s tough to stop putting pressure on yourself. You might even be afraid that if you relax a bit, things around you will fall apart. But putting less pressure on yourself can be key to feeling better, living a better life and actually getting the results you want.
