How To Get Better at Anything
Have you ever wondered why some people are really good at what they do?
1. Why Do you want to be better
Understand why you want to get better at something is the first step in getting better at anything.
Do you want to get the same results in less time? Not getting the results you want? Do you want to master that thing so you can teach or mentor others? Are you trying to prove a point? Because someone else thinks you should? Why do you want to get better at that thing?
Be sure your “why” is something that empowers you, not drains you.
One of my coaching clients, wanted to become better at sales because she had started an online business. She wanted to feel more competent and confident in sales so she could cut out overtime and weekends in her full time career. Her why she wants to be better, is very clear.
2. Find people doing what you want to do
Get together with them, observe them, and ask for their guidance.
If they seem untouchable search for their website, youtube channel.
Observe them and study them.
Check out who they go to for advice. Then take the time to reflect on what they’re doing that you can start to do, too.
Many of my mentors I have never met, I listen to their podcasts, I read their books and I have learned so much from them without ever meeting or reaching out. I actively look for something they are doing, saying, or not doing that would be a learning opportunity for me.
This is a great way to get better at anything.
3. Take away rather than add
You may feel like you have to do something new or in addition to what you already do in order to “get better.”
Consider what you might be able to cut out or stop doing rather than add. Consider the steps, obstacles, distractions, and interruptions you can stop, reduce, or eliminate.
I see it so often in sales, people I coach are saying way too much. Talking customers out of sales. So I teach a lot to say less. Takeaway what you are doing, not adding anything more to do.
One leader I was coaching, wanted to get better at overcoming objections in sales. What she decided to stop doing was, making up stories about what the no, or no response meant and said about her.
To get better at this, everytime she didn’t hear back from a potential customer or they weren’t interested she had to say out loud “Stop making up stories” to help her keep going on her sales journey.
4.Practice what you've learned
Be consistent and persistent!! PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!
Top performers, no matter their area of expertise, have similar practice regimen: brief , intense or laser focused, daily or very regular practice time.
Learn something and try it out. Practice it, and then look at the results and gain you’ve had.
Anything you want to be great at you can. Anything you want to be better at, you can? Anything you want to accomplish you can!!
Everything is figure-it-outable!
