How to Gain The Self Esteem You Deserve

What is self esteem?
First, let’s clarify what self-esteem is. Self-esteem is how we perceive ourselves. How does it feel when you think about the way you look, how smart you are, how good you are at sports, or how much money you make?

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? How do you feel?

Our society is suffering from low self-esteem and poor self-worth. With a strong emphasis being placed on celebrities and entertainment, it can be easy to start comparing yourself to others and even celebrities. Everybody is vulnerable to this problem, but our youth are most affected.

Self-esteem problems do not just affect young people and children. Even if they didn’t experience it during their tween or teen years, a lot of adults experience low self-esteem or low self-worth.

A positive self-esteem can be built and maintained by following these tips.

1. Try not to compare yourself to others.

The first step toward achieving a positive self-esteem is to stop comparing yourself to others.

You can only work with what you have – and that is probably a lot, so stop looking at what others have and start focusing on what you already have and embracing it.

Remember the grass is not always greener – remember, you don’t always know what’s going on behind the scenes.

2. Identify strengths and opportunities for improvement

There are several reasons why you may not feel as confident or positive about certain aspects of your life.
Try figuring out why.

Making and having a list of your strengths and areas for improvement will help you to recognize what you are good at, while letting you know what you need to work on.

When identifying areas for improvement, it’s important to be aware of the language you use and what you are saying to yourself.

example: You might want to improve your fitness, but saying “I’m fat” creates a negative tone. Instead, under your list of areas for improvement say ‘focus more on physical health’ or ‘visit the gym twice a week.’

3. Be willing to change

As you work on embracing your strengths and working on areas you want to improve, it’s important to update your list as you grow and change!

Celebrate the small things and before you know it all those small things will have made a big difference.

Making the list is one thing- but being motivated to put in the work and make the change is another.

Don’t give up, keep going! Turn your fear and hesitation into motivation and remember you are putting in the effort for a great cause. You are investing in yourself and no one can take that from you.

4. Set Realistic Expectations

Perfection doesn’t exist, and change is not something which happens over night.

Your goal is to become the best version of yourself and YOU are the person who identifies the best version.

Remember that we all make mistakes. Don’t beat yourself up when you encounter a setback. Learn from it and move on.

And a few more ways to Grow your self esteem...

  1. Surround yourself with positive people!

  2. Positive affirmations and positive self talk are SOOOOO important.

  3. Take a social media detox or internet break if that is where the comparison or negativity is coming from. 

  4. Do more of what you LOVE!

  5. Live in the present. You cannot change the past. 

  6. Share how you feel with others. A supportive bestie, counselor, someone who loves you and see the best in you and what you have to offer the world.

The bottom line is improving self-esteem requires work and being very aware of self talk and what triggers negative thoughts about yourself.

It is worth the investment, YOU ARE WORTH the INVESTMENT!
